SCHS Sharks State Championship Celebration
Sharks Celebrate Championship
On Wednesday, February 5, the Pearland community came together at Shadow Creek High School to celebrate the Shark’s state football championship. Pregame activities included food trucks in the parking lot for attendees, and vendors in the school hallway selling, among other things, championship t-shirts and embroidered commemorative footballs.
Cheerleaders and dance team lined the sides of the auditorium as emcee Jimmy Vollman introduced each coach, player, trainer, and support staff, who entered through the rear and came down the center aisle to applause, high fives, and handshakes.
Alvin ISD Superintendent Carol Nelson started off the night’s festivities with a congratulatory speech to the team. Following Nelson, Alvin ISD Board of Trustees President Earl Humbird spoke to the crowd and team, while Jeremiah Harris and Jared Jackson joined him at the podium representing the Sharks.
A representative from Congressman Pete Olson’s staff and state representative Ed Thompson each read proclamations prepared and signed by them regarding the championship, and presented the documents to player representatives at the podium. Following that, Pearland Mayor Tom Reid, joined onstage by city council members Luke Orlando, Adrian Hernandez, Gary Moore, and Trent Perez, read and presented a proclamation by the City to Beau Burns and Terreance Ellis representing the Sharks. Pearland Chamber of Commerce Chairman Donna Coneley and Director Ed Mears presented a trophy recognizing the state championship to team representatives.
Interspersed throughout the speeches were highlights from the regular season and playoff games leading up to the championship game.
Shadow Creek High School Principal Kelly Hestand then surprised Mrs. Nelson and Coach Butler with custom tennis shoes designed and painted by SCHS Senior Teresa Sandoval. Ms. Sandoval gained recognition when her Instagram post of her painted clothes was recognized by Green Bay Packers receiver Marquez Valdez, who requested she paint cleats for him for the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign.
Head Coach Brad Butler then took to the podium to once again congratulate the team, thank the players for their efforts, then recognize and thank all the individuals and groups that went into a successful season, from the band and choir, to the training staff, Alvin ISD board, Shadow Creek faculty and staff, and the fans. Following Butler, players Jeremiah Harris, Javeon Bell, and Courtney Brown spoke to the crowd on behalf of the team.
Highlights of the championship game played on the screen, followed by the presentation of autographed trophy footballs to the team’s business sponsors, Principal Hestand, and members of the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees. The event closed with the Shadow Creek Choir singing the school song.
